Riveting from start to finish. The main character is complex, interesting and wildly wildly intelligent. Def the best portrayal of a smart character I've seen in books. I find that a lot of times authors just want to tell you the character is smart and not show bc a character can only be as smart as an author but Jane was def a shining example of what to do. A couple of characters are casually queer. And you can see in real time affection between characters blossom. Loved this book.

this book is equally charming and uncomfortable. i thoroughly enjoyed reading it. although some describe the book as slow, i enjoyed even the "boring" parts. the characters are amazing, jane is a perfect protagonist. i love her personality, especially her wit.

and yes, it is VERY uncomfortable to read. it should be, especially for white readers like me. america's history is deeply disturbing, even without zombies thrown into the mix. the real history is considerably worse—those atrocities are real, so real, and still affecting Black and Indigenous people today. white supremacy is violent outside of fiction, too.

Jane is apparently bi or pansexual and it looks like Katherine is asexual. That was a delightful surprise even though I'd love to see it explored more. Hopefully in the sequels it will be.

While the beginning felt a little slow, this book ended up flying by! Really cool premise, a great look into alternative history, and a reflection on racism, classism, and colonialism (but also zombies). Special shout-out to the second-to-last battle in the book because the escalation of tension was beautiful and so gripping. Really loved this one!
