Nope. Sorry. Not for me. I really have to stop trying to like Andrea Speed's work, because we're just not compatible. What they find hilarious, I don't even find remotely funny. We're just not a good pairing.
I DNF'd this one at 5% for all the same reasons that I DNF'd their Infected series after just one story.
The editing, the humour, the lack of world-building, the repetition, the contradictory statements, the need to validate and justify plot choices, and the excess of info-dumps disguised as humour, just didn't work for me.

Short list of issues:
* "it looked like a choker, therefore pretty ridiculous on him" - why? Why is that ridiculous? This is the second time in 2 pages that the author has tried to "rationalise" and excuse the MC using logical adaptations as necessary, e.g. justifying non-macho things like sewing and chokers, as if they're something to be ashamed/embarrassed about, by claiming it's only for safety.
* "Logan gave him an anemic slap on the arm, but it was barely a love tap" - needless emphasis, as they both mean the same thing.
* "They'd simply be gravy." - seriously? What are we, in the 70's? Nothing about this character suggests this would be his natural way of speaking.
* author's love - and my hate - of parenthesis
* a flashback that is not a flashback, because it wavers all over the place, throughout space/time, and includes hindsight/retrospect.
* repetition of info dumps, often needless and/or in the wrong place

and my biggest problem * this book reads like a formulaic copy of the only book I read in the Infected series. Begins with action scene, MC goes home to boyfriend who is ugly to everyone but him, thought a monster to everyone but him, includes excessively long chapters, heavy parenthesis use and lack of world-building, jumps around in thought and is a 3rd person narrative with a 1st person flair. None of which works for me.

Finally...the pièce de résistance...the first chapter is...and let me say this slowly, so it sinks in..................SIXTEEN PERCENT.................. For one chapter. That's a whopping 35 pages. Which is an entire short story.

Nope. Sorry. This is where I bow out and leave this book to the people who will actually enjoy it. It's not for me, and this author and I are never going to be reading-buddies. Our styles/likes just aren't compatible and that's fine. I gave them a good shot - this is my third book by them - and it's enough to know that we should stop seeing each other, bookishly. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who will love this book, but it's not me. Sorry.

This was a good book but I think there were too many characters packed into a story that I wish had been longer. It just felt compressed even though it was a full-length book.
