The Lightning Thief is the first instalment of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympian’s series. It follows Percy Jackson as he discovers that he is not a normal pre-teen boy, but actually a Demi-god, or half-blood. He not only discovers who his father is, but who he is himself, and sets off on a quest to try and prevent a war between the gods. My favourite character is Percy and my least favourite character is Gabe. I recommend this book because it was such an interesting read, so creative and original, with fantastic world-building and characterisation. I started reading it because I’ve been watching the new series, and I am so glad. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series, and for the rest of the show to come out. ‘I’d finally found a family, people who cared about me and thought I’d done something right.’

“It's funny how humans can wrap their mind around things and fit them into their version of reality.”

I never got the opportunity to read this as a child. I only watched the films, and they weren’t the worst thing I had seen, but definitely not the best. I wasn’t allowed to get into anything related to magic and fantasy. I’m a daughter of an immigrant mother from Latin America who grew up and was raised Catholic, so this and Harry Potter and all similar things had been considered “demonic” by my family. Now I’m 23 and reading this first installment for the first time, which is good timing for the tv series coming out in December this year. As they say, better late than never.

In short though, I had fun with this. I’m already a big fan of Percy, with his unfiltered, sassy personality; Grover and his devotion; Annabeth and her determination to prove herself. The trio is incredible, heartfelt and fun. I found myself laughing and even crying (I just have a soft spot for kids being bullying), but there was never a moment I found myself wanting to stop. The writing doesn’t come off as too juvenile, which was quite surprising considering this is a middle grade/juvenile novel. Regardless, it’s incredibly easy to follow, with no complexities making the read difficult or feel too narrow. There are a lot of characters, but they all come well together. I didn’t find myself too confused on anything regarding certain details about people or the Greek knowledge in general.

I know nothing about Greek mythology, so I will refrain from commenting on that completely and on basing my enjoyment from that too. I feel inclined to mention most of the Greek mythology mentioned here, however, seemed common enough to know from what I learned years before. There were a couple things I had to look up myself as I had no previous knowledge on it, but again, I’ll refrain from commenting on anything related to accuracy and correct representation.

I’m so curious to see where Percy’s strength and powers will develop and how he grows to become one of the strongest demigods, so I’m already anticipating reading the rest of the series, as well as everything else in the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles. Don’t mind me as I make my way through this.
