First of all I learned that books they make kids read in school now are much better/more relevant than the stuff we had to read. Sure The Outsiders was a good book but in the 80's the 50's were still something we never experienced in our lifetimes.

Stargirl was published in this decade and takes place there as well! Even if the characters are in 10th grade, I don't think that my son's class would have any problem identifying with the theme of appearing "normal", the price of conformity and how one person can have an impact on your life decades later.

I honestly did not expect to be sucked in, because it WAS a book that was required reading for my son's 7th grade language arts class and the cover-pretty plain.

Well, that is what I get for thinkin'! Great book-I cruised through it in about 3 hours. On my emotional scalse...it made me laugh AND it made me cry!

I would even suggest going out and buying this one EVEN if it isn't required reading at your childs school.

Any review of this by me needs context because clearly this book was not written for me. I was an adult when it first came out and I'm still an adult now, and I only read it today because I was doing laundry at my mother's house and it was on the end table and I needed something that I could finish reading by the time the load was done. I'm rating it a little higher than I was originally inclined because it's clearly beloved by many and I recognise my bias.

The thing is, even as a middle-grade book, it's pretty shallow and overwrought, and it's a manic pixie dream girl before the trope was named. The main character is a nondescript coward, and I didn't really enjoy spending all that time in his first-person POV when he was the least interesting person in the room. The idea that people should feel free to be themselves is a great one. I don't feel like that's the actual message this book delivered. That said, many people who read the book as young people say that's the message they got from it, so what do I know?

Maybe I'm just disappointed because I went into a book called Stargirl expecting her to be an alien.
