This novel had me wanting to DNF it like more than ten times! It was just really slow for me and I realized in the middle of the book that this is not what it's sold out to be — a gay version of My Lady Jane. It just isn't. It reads like a middle-grade adventure book, and nothing is wrong with that, it's just that it put a damper on what I was expecting for it to be. I like the pining and all of that, it's delicious but it felt lacking on my end. There were a few pieces of the writing that stood out for me but none that made me think the whole thing is special. I'd still recommend it though, it's a good historical fiction, the author clearly did some research, it shows in the Author's Notes at the end. 3.5/5 stars!

Look, I just adored this. I adored it. (The plot was shaky here and there but really I just didn't care that much.) Could not stop reading for more than a moment, right from the very beginning.

This book is abso-bloody-lutely incredible. I've fallen in love with each and every one of the characters, even Monty himself, which was unexpected (he was a bit of an arse in the beginning). The writing is brilliant in its historical accuracy and authenticity, who knew 18th century characters could be so relateable? This book is witty and snarky and romantic and piratic and beautiful; it's everything I've ever wanted.

This story was delightful. I listened to the audiobook and adored the narration. The characters were both lovable and infuriating. The plot was fast-moving and adventurous. There was a heart-meltingly sweet gay love story. It was just what I needed after reading some heavier books these past few weeks. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

The Actual Review

Everyone read this dang book!!

AH! I cannot even express my pure and utter love for this books and its characters. This is an easy reccomend to everyone and everyone. Like HOT DAMN!

You know when you get a book and you're reading it and it just flies by so fast, and 100 pages is nothing because you love it so much that it's so easy to read ...? Exactly this book for me.

All the characters are wonderful and distinct and great.

Loved Monty's personality, narration and journey.

Percy was a darling start to finish. #softboi

Felicity was such a wonderful female character, and one of my favourites throughout the book (and overall too if I am honest). She's tough, smart, kind, bad ass .... etc.

Besides the main three, all characters felt well developed to me. I hated a few, were annoyed by others and sympathized with some. I also love the diversity within the cast. Hmmmmmmmm so good.

The plot itself was not what I was expecting when I picked it up nonetheless FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC. I don't want to dive too deep because I went into the book not knowing anything about it and if anyone else wishes to do the same I don't to wreck that for them. But let me tell you, you got adventure, romance, a little mystery and a lot of well placed sass. The three go all over the place and the writing was so vivid that I felt that I was there too. I smelled the sea, saw the dim lights, heard the voices of party goers ... you get the point.

Altogether amazing. The hype behind it was 100% justified. I loved it and want to read it again!

I can't even really express my love for it.
