This is a story that truly describes what it means to be haunted.

This was an interesting little book. Taking place in an alternate England during the Edwardian period with strange technology, no monarchy, and ghosts. A Postwar sci-fi dystopian novella. This is listed as a horror but I wouldn't say that it has any horror aspects unless you call one ghost horror. The MC has just returned from war with injuries that leave him unable to function properly and is visited nightly by his commanding officer who is dead. But it is not scary. It was a nicely written melancholy short story.

Does a lot of really interesting things and a lot that just feel clumsy. The best part is the wild contrast between the stiff upper lip bantery dialogue and the deep despair of the inner monologue. Capturing the PTSD and the ruin of a psyche is really the most valuable bit. The ghost parts aren't scary or very interesting, and the answers to every mystery are sort of irrelevant and throwaway. The alternate history seems very tacked on, like it belongs in a much longer novel that made use of the setting with the themes. Good prose experience, not worth lingering on, maybe.

I didn't entirely know what to expect going into this story. But let me tell you that it was absolutely delightful! And bonus, the Author's Note gave me new music to listen to! I can't wait to read more by this author!

Do you want to read a beautifully-written ghost story about grief, trauma, war, and love? Because I sure do, always.

It's a ghost story. It's a story about the aftermath of war.

I need to read it again.
