I was expecting a slightly spooky, maybe a little shallow, middle grade fantasy and instead I got a deeper dive. This book does sibling relationships well, and it does morality well, but it never got quite as deep as I would have liked. That said, it *is* middle grade. I thoroughly enjoyed this one I just wish it had been a little meatier and/or I'd had more time to settle in with these characters (and learn more about the magic system).

The plot was interesting but was put on pause too many times to focus on the strange arguing between the siblings. Also, the brother does seem TERRIBLE and the younger sister is constantly having to calm him, reassure him, guide him—which should not be the job of a young child.

Thank you Harper Collins and NetGalley for sharing an eARC in exchange for an honest review. This book was the fantasy book I needed. It had excellent world building, powerful characters, unique magic, and suspense. I loved this book.

Brief thoughts originally published 29 December 2020 at Falling Letters.
- I adore the cover of this book – a good match for the story inside!
- But I didn’t make good notes so this will truly be a point form review

This was a super fun read, really imaginative and lots of interesting plot twists. Her magical system has elements that I don't think I've read anywhere else, and the sibling dynamic is done really well.
