While I didn't think this was as good as the first in the series throughout the first half, I was still gripped enough to make it through to the end, and the latter half really brought the whole thing together. I absolutely loved how the 2-book series was wrapped up. Reading through Marta's legacy had me smiling, crying, and gripping the edge of my seat to see how this will play out. It had me wanting to yell at the characters, to cry with them, to give them a hug. The core message, God is always with you, really shone through, especially at the end. It was another astounding series by Francine Rivers.

This book, along with the one before it, "Her Mother's Hope," was amazing! At first, I wasn't sure how much I would like them for a couple reasons. First, I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints, and our beliefs can be very different from those of other Christians. Second, this isn't a type of book I usually read, and I wouldn't have chosen the series for myself. A family member who is growing closer to Christ and was about to read them herself suggested that I might like them. I'm very glad I read them! Even though I'm a Latter-day Saint, our beliefs and those of other Christians, like the people in this series, are similar enough that I can relate when they talk about their faith, trusting God, and letting Him lead and guide you. Church members are still Christians, as the name of the Church says, and I was a nondenominational Christian before I joined the Church, so that helps me relate even more.
I admired many of the characters because of their faith, especially May Flower Dawn. I want to get to where I read my scriptures the way she read her Bible, every day, taking strength and comfort from God's words. I often forget to read since I haven't been able to find a scheduled time to do so.
The characters are very realistic and easy to relate to, and I got so into this series that I couldn't put it down. I cried when the characters cried and was happy when they were. The second book especially had me crying. If you're a Christian of any denomination, I definitely recommend this series!

Wow. This book really was a intricately woven story.... that held SO much. It grabbed me and had me aching, angry, and grounded; it was such a story. I loved seeing the pictures and history tidbits from Francine Rivers', as well!

Her Daughter’s Dream continues the fascinating character study Francine Rivers began in Her Mother’s Hope. This book covers the lives of Marta’s daughter and granddaughters. The characters seemed so real to me and the hurts they inflicted upon each other so damaging that, again, I found this book difficult to read yet impossible to put down.

Spanning from the 1950s to present day, this book tells the story of Hildemara’s battle with tuberculosis. Because of her illness, her daughter Carolyn forms a special bond with Grandmother Marta. When Hildemara returns to work and Marta leaves, Carolyn is neglected and tries several destructive paths before returning home to her mother. We see the past repeated as Carolyn’s daughter Dawn forms a strong bond, not with her mother, but with Grandmother Hildemara. Finally, as Dawn struggles to avoid the examples of those who have gone before her, she finds a way to bridge the gap between the women in her family. After so long a time coming, redemption of the family history is sweet!

I can’t say enough about Francine Rivers’s ability to sweep me away into a story, particularly this story of four generations of women. Her Daughter’s Dream reminded me of a biblical saga, where folks make surprising decisions and choices that somehow are completely within their characters. In this volume, I could better relate to the inner conflicts the characters faced, and I rejoiced to see softer sides of Marta and Hildemara.

Upon finishing this story, I was left thinking, How do we ever find peace in our family relationships when we are so quick to judge, control, and manipulate each other? As this book shows, the answer can only be found in Christ. And sometimes, even when we find the answer, it is too late to regain the many wasted years. Thank God this world is just a stepping stone to eternity. Believers can rest assured that no matter how they’ve treated their loved ones, in Heaven all tears shall be wiped away, and we all shall each receive a fresh start.

I reviewed Her Daughter’s Dream as part of the Tyndale Summer Reading Program.

The second book in Marta's Legacy, this book takes off where Her Mother's Hope ended off. This book was a great read, raw and real. The things that happen in the book are tragedies and miracles of everyday life. I think that's what kept me reading this novel despite it being such a long read. I cried a lot in the end. After spending about a 1000 pages with a family you get very invested in their relationships, and this ending wasn't one to spare my emotions. Overall a good read.
