This was about a part of Franklin's life I'm not familiar with. The explanation of the scientific method & placebos didn't feel forced. However, it lacked source notes, which would have been helpful.

This was a great read aloud. Kids (10 year olds) were mesmerized for sure!

I see why this is a good, well thought out, awesomely designed picture book about Benjamin Franklin. It's not for me though.

The Good: I think the story is gripping and wonderfully told. I think this could easily engage the most reluctant of readers.

The Bad: I worry that the "fanciness" of the typeface and color block changes could be a huge hindrance to struggling readers or those with any reading disability.

The Ugly: Not found here. The illustrations are delightful.

F&P Level R. Interesting narrative nonfiction about how Benjamin Franklin discovered the placebo effect using the scientific method.

Scientific method and history together in one book as Benjamin Franklin debunks mesmerism in France in the late 1700s. The book has excellent illustrations, facts and graphics and a very good explanation of the scientific method along with the story of Ben Franklin and how he debunked mesmerism on a visit to Paris. I enjoyed the story very much and I think it will be an excellent addition to libraries and schools.

Once in a while I will pick up a book for my kids that is somewhat random and I am surprised by it. This was one of those instances that I found one that ended up being one of my favorite children' book that I have read. I know the power of plecebo and I love the history with Franklin's visit to Paris, his scientific mind, and how it actually helped form America. Eventually I will find this book and put it on my shelf, because it inspired me and filled me with pride.
