I felt a lot of emotions while reading this book, mainly with the main character's love interest. I guess that means the author did a good job, because I was always siding with the main character's feelings. It was fast paced and funny, though some of the adult characters seemed to be a little immature for their roles. Overall a very interesting read!

I tried. I almost put the book down and then decided to give it a second chance. I think the novel is good up until main character and her space camp team members gain alien superpowers. Then I really lost interest. The writing just wasn't as clean some of her other books for young people.

If I were a teenage girl, I would probably have enjoyed this more than I did. This was a fast-paced book with a lot of action. But too much time was spent on kissing and thinking about kissing and wondering when more kissing will happen.
Also, supposedly good parents let their teenage daughter go spend the night with a boy they don't know so she can save the world. Admitted I'm not a fantasy fan, but this was a little far fetched. 2.5 stars.

Dangerous is a bit of a departure for author Shannon Hale, who takes the teen romance into solid science fiction territory. The romantic aspect is more or less standard fare. The sci-fi aspect isn't particularly inspired, either. But Hale does manage to pull off a happy marriage of the two, and the story, while thematically scattered, is engaging all the way through. Dangerous is a diverting, if not exactly life-altering, day's reading.

Content advisory:
SpoilerLanguage is literally bleeped out all the way through. Sex is suggested but never takes place.

I've read other books by Shannon Hale before although they're always about lost princesses or fantasy lands - not science fiction. I am glad, though, that she decided to expand her horizons and try out another genre.

The main issue I had with this book is that it went too fast. Smart kids to outer space to betrayals to aliens to more betrayals to alien invasion to safety. I feel like it might have been better suited to a duology because it didn't feel real to me. I was reading the story and that's all.

I really did like the characters although they could have benefited from more character development. I really liked how Ms. Hale killed off characters in a useful and mysterious way. For example when one of the team was drowned, Maisie starts to have some doubts.

That's what I liked most about it: the mystery. You don't know whose side anyone is on. And in the end, you're still not entirely sure. All you know is that it's all good.

That brings me to my next point - the ending. In spite of the book not being developed enough, I really liked the ending scenes. It wrapped everything up nicely and left me feeling satisfied.

The Final Verdict:

A different sort of alien book that was nice to read but could use a bit more length to develop the characters and premise/background.

Quotes:

“Why did everyone else seem fine but I felt as if I were living in a cage I'd outgrown two shoe sizes ago?”

“Humming the Star Wars theme to encourage myself, I wobbled onto my feet. Sometimes a girl's gotta provide her own trumpet-heavy heroic soundtrack.”

“You'd better not talk about microscopes anymore," he whispered, "or I don't know if I can control myself.”

“And this is where I'll end, before I know what happens next.”

“We were quiet, two tiny specks glued down by gravity, peering at a universe that didn't notice us back.”

It definitely got better as it went on. But the beginning was slow and implausible. I just didn't believe that these events would/could happen. And it felt as if the author was writing in this genre simply because it's popular right now. In short, I wouldn't recommend it, but it wasn't utterly awful.

This is a really strange book. I loved it. 100%. I was really surprised with how well I liked it.

Reading this book was like riding a roller coaster for me. I loved the beginning and the end, but things got weird and a little too romancy for me, honestly, especially since the end of the world is looming. I really liked how everything came toogether in the end, though, so I'm willing to forgive the middle. Some other things I liked: space, space camp plus weird super powers and aliens, space, super cool gadgets (I really want a pair of those impact boots), more space, geekiness, and did I mention space? But seriously, this was tightly plotted and did a good job of balancing the saving-the-world goal with some really high personal stakes. There's even a protagonist with a physical disability that she makes light of, which is great from my perspective, though it's also the reason this book gets 4 stars rather than 5. Maisie has no arm, but she lives with that just fine. Great. But her parents keep her home and isolated at least partly because of her disability, and the minute Maisie gets superpowers, the first thing she does is build herself a robotic arm. Her disability never really disappears though, which is good. But as someone with a disability, I don't approve of the message, however implied or unintended, that a disability is a cause for shame or something that needs to be fixed. Also, super minor nitpick, pretending you're blind to bring your dog on a bus or into a hospital is bad. Very bad. Do not do it. Okay rant over, and I want to reiterate that even though I'm making a big deal out of this, it was only one part of the story, and I think it resolved itself in the end at least somewhat. So on the whole, this was a fun, fast read and I would recommend.
