Gilio-Whitaker argues that environmental justice needs to operate more expansively when considering indigenous communities because of the deep cultural connections that indigenous people have with specific locations and their worldviews regarding the rights and personhood of the environment. This means that indigenized environmental justice is directly tied to colonialism, patriarchy, and genocide that happened in this country's history and how they continue to manifest themselves today. I think this book did a great job introducing me to the concept of indigenized environmental justice and articulating this argument. I felt more confident in my understanding as I read the book, which made me think that perhaps some of the end material would have been better introduced in the beginning (the last chapter really does a lot of work establishing the importance of place in indigenous worldviews). Nonetheless, as I feel nearly ever time I read more work by indigenous authors, this book helped me better understand other indigenous literature I have read and I appreciate how Gilio-Whitaker has made her work so accessible (interesting, coherent, informative, applicable, and short!).

Short and sweet read on environmental justice from a Native Nations perspective. Lots of poignant chapters here, and important history parsed throughout, particularly the one about National Parks.

I tried. I really did. But this read like an academic paper in that it was not written for the average reader. The subject matter is incredibly important, but I wasn't absorbing any of the information because I was too busy trying to decipher every paragraph-long sentence.
