I don’t think it would be a surprise to anyone who knows me that I loved a book called “Dogtown”. It is a very sweet sometimes sad story about a shelter that not only has real dogs but also robot dogs all of whom have been abandoned by their humans. We follow them through what it takes for them to find their forever home and also how they ended up in the shelter in the first place. I read this aloud with my 10 and 11 year old dog loving boys and they loved it as well. It’s is a heart-warming story that any dog lover will enjoy. Chance was definitely a favorite of mine but my youngest really liked Metal Head, lol. They were both already asking if there was going to be a second book.

Just finished reading this one with my daughter, and we enjoyed it.
I wouldn’t say it’s my favourite by Applegate, who is definitely one of the authors I recommend most to my students! I found the super short chapters to be very distracting to the story, and I wished that the chapters were longer and that they were numbered (instead of the random titles).

That being said, we really enjoyed the characters. We loved that it was narrated by Chance, such a loveable and engaging dog! And we really liked that there were heartwarming moments, humour, some dicey action bits, and a wrapped up ending. The addition of “robot dogs” was interesting, and the comparison between robots and real dogs was something to ponder.

Overall, an enjoyable read!
Great for ages 6-10.

What a wonderful somewhat beginner chapter book that is perfect for 3rd -5th graders!  Katherine Applegate writes animal fiction for kids like no other and this book is now exception.  This is about a dog shelter that houses lost or abandoned dogs, but also robot dogs. Chance doesn't like robot dogs, until he meets Metal Head and with the help of a mouse, the three of them form a friendship and help other dogs and some kids throughout the book.  Chance ends up finding his home, and Metal Head realizes he's needed someplace knew. Heart warming and tear jerking, this novel will be loved by kids and adults alike!
