This book is not what you think. It's about a journey, all right, but not the one you think you're going on.

It's a very small story about people who could live on your street. I don't think anyone could read this story and not see themselves, at some point, as either Harold or his wife. Or both. Possibly more than once.

I really don't want to say too much because I don't want to give away what happens. You need to just relax and go with the flow, let the story unfold for you as it does for Harold and his wife.

Bon livre mais par moment un peu ennuyeux. Aucune surprise quand au déroulement de l'histoire, dommage.

Most people we pass in the streets seem ever so ordinary. They may even seem ordinary to themselves, but everyone has secrets and everyone has issues and everyone has extraordinary potential.

This book is about redemption and how it needs to come from within us. The prose is beautiful and extremely well done. The characters come right off the pages and are sticking with me.

3.5 stars. This book was sweet. It had a message and I liked it. But it was a bit repetitive at times and just a touch predictable.

Beautiful sad happy utterly human story. Unexpected. Read it in two days. Looking forward to reading the parallel story about Queenie Hennessey.

If you picked this book it is because you were intrigued by the premise, maybe because you like gentle British fiction that explores more of the rest of the population rather than the full British stereotypes. You probaly like [a:Alan Bennett|11781|Alan Bennett|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1234747177p2/11781.jpg] and as the book begins i found myself thinking Alan Bennett could have written this so much better. But I am so glad a marched on with Harold because when he hits his stride so does the writing, the characters flesh out. From a very shaky start and logic to his journey the flaws and thoughts start to be revealed and as the journey progresses you start to will Harold on instead of slapping him around for being such a dunce. The conclusion is as it should be, the trip ends up being without dramatic denouement but I think it would have been disappointing if there was one. Started two stars but i ended up really liking this book

An excellent book.
This book has been out in the UK for a while and will be released in North America this summer.

A fantastically moving story of a man who gets a letter from an old friend saying she is dying of cancer and decides to walk to her across the whole of England.

There were so many fantastic elements to this story, the walk itself and the things that happen to Harold while he's walking were very vivid. The walk as a metaphor for life and for life's journey with all the reflection that having endless hours of silence by yourself can bring. The characters are very vivid, as is the setting.

One of the best elements for me was also the ending. I really had no idea where it was going to go and it turns out to be a writing on the meaning of life, our time here, and what we do with it.

I got this book as an advance copy and this is really why the advance copy program was started, for books like these by a first time author that are so fantastic and need word of mouth to spread.

This book will be the next big thing, read it, tell your friends, take a walk with Harold Fry.
