This chilly book shows a little girl out on the ice tying on her ice skates when she is approached by a penguin. They skate together and enjoy one another and then the penguin disappears to get Flora (the little girl) a fish. She is put off by the fish and throws it back which upsets the penguin. The girl then fishes out another fish with the penguinโ€™s help and they are once again happy with one another after working as a team. This book has a lot of peak-a-boo flip overs which show the action and next part of the scene. I like that gives a lesson on the feelings of others and gives insights as to how different people appreciate things in seperate ways.

Maybe because I am a huge fan of figure skating, but I liked Flora and the Penguin better than the original.

I really enjoy the Flora books. I like how each animal gets a different type of dance, and I love that this book features ice skating! The flaps aren't done too much to be annoying, but it could be problematic for some readers. It also features a soft color palate and a lot of emotion. Sweet.

For: penguin lovers; readers looking for a wordless book.

Possible red flags: some readers may not appreciate the wordless aspect; disagreements with a friend.

Wordless picture book: Flora and the Penguin by Molly Idle, published on September 30, 2014. Age Level: K-3. This story was an illustrated animation about a girl named Flora and a penguin that enjoyed to ice skate together. The penguin got hungry and wanted to go under the ice to get a fish, but when he came up to show Flora the fish he caught, Flora was upset that she was left to skate by herself and threw the fish back in the water. Eventually, Flora and the penguin worked together to get the fish back and skated together again. I think a book such as this could be very useful for students to use their inference skills to tell me what they believe is happening in the story. The animations are very simple, leading me to believe that it could be suited best for children in lower elementary, but I would use this book to challenge students to understand what is going on without relying on words completely for comprehension.

Amazing. Amazing. Amazing.
Flora and the Penguins was good. It was clever. The illustrations and color scheme were beautiful. How would the next one follow??
Flora and the Penguin is gorgeously crafted. The illustrations are again, top of the line but this time I think the story line is more cohesive and there is more to talk about. I feel like I know Flora this time around but after reading this story, I feel like we are BFFs.
Well done, Molly Idle.

Flora's romp with the Penguin is just as captivating and charming as her turn with the Flamingo.
