What a wonderful and original book! I started reading this expecting a run-of-the-mill paranormal romance and instead I was surprised by a story full of suspense and intrigue. The main character, Ellie, is slowly introduced to a world where people who appear ordinary actually have gifts that enable them to keep the balance of good and evil in the world. She has to find her place in this mysterious world and we're left with a perfect cliffhanger at the end. I'm excited to find out what happens next!

Review from Tea & Titles

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

When I was looking through Goodreads, trying to pick which books to request from #IndieBooksBeSeen, I came across The Core. Almost all of the reviews told me how this was one of the most unique stories they’d ever read. I’m a sucker for unique stories, so I couldn’t pass this one up.

Those reviews were totally right. I’ve never read anything quite like The Core. The paranormal aspect to the book is incredible. I don’t want to explain what it is, because spoilers and also I don’t exactly know how to put it into words. I will say, there are a few different ‘powers’ involved—some you see quite often in books, but then there are some which are incredibly different to anything I’ve ever read or seen. Sometimes paranormal books can be a bit iffy for me. When I like them, I really like them but when I don’t, well, I really don’t. I’m always sort of worried that the paranormal thing won’t be interesting or different, or the characters will just be so stupid that I can’t handle it. Neither of those things happened in The Core.

I really like the main character Ellie, and not just because we share a name (even if it’s spelt differently, it totally counts). She’s a smart woman with an actual job, which is pretty rare in New Adult right? At least in the stuff I’ve read, NA characters never seem to like their jobs. Ellie on the other hand does, and she’s actually good at what she does—that made me so happy, you have no idea. She also has this amazing twin brother named Jacob, who is hilarious and brilliant and I really hope we get to see more of him in the upcoming books. We’ve also got David, Ellie’s boss. Now, David—we had a bit of a bumpy start. I made few notes in iBooks which were all basically ‘red flag’, ‘run girl’ etc. etc. He wasn’t actually that creepy once the story started. In fact, when everything is explained later on, that earlier stuff is actually kind of funny. You’ll have to read to find out what I mean.

The only thing is, I wish there’d been a little more world-building in this one. This is a five book series, I believe, so I know we’ll probably get some intense world-building in the next book, but I still would have liked to have seen a little here.

Overall, The Core was a great start to a new series. I can’t wait to see where the rest of the books will take Ellie, David and the rest of the characters. I would definitely recommend this to anyone look for a fun paranormal.

Thank you to Kate Thomas for sending me a copy of her book, and Mark Shaw for organising it.
