This was one of my favorite childhood books. I've read it so many times, but never logged it before! The message of helpfulness, compassion, and cooperation rings as true today as it did when it was first published.

Today I shared it with a first grade class during their Zoom session, which is an interesting way to share a book to say the least! I was glad to be able to see the class one more time, since my regular monthly visits with them were canceled for the last couple of months. They enjoyed the book (lots of claps and thumbs ups!).

Grandma Tildy lives all by herself and works very hard. One day a pet salesman comes to her door with a truckload of animals and asks if she would like a bird--Grandma Tildy says yes, but "No elephants." The bird helps her and the pet man returns again and again offering different animals. She always says yes, but "No elephants." The animals work with her and make her life a little happier and easier. Until one day the pet man just leaves the elephant at her house. Now what is Grandma Tildy to do when the elephant crashes through the floor and eats all her food?

I remember loving this book as a child. I'm not entirely sure what the appeal was, but there was something. It's fun to read with a child who can quickly join in on the "But no elephants" line. Fun childhood memories.

Grandma likes to take in various animals and give them a good home but she swears on her life that she'll never take in any elephants. She denies the elephant several times and her house starts to get a little crowded with all of the other animals but she holds her ground. Will she even let the poor elephant inside and give him a good home?

This book is one that kids will enjoy for quite awhile and will help with reading skills. It also has a good message about thinking about your own prejudices, which Grandma has to face eventually.

There was a school event where I had to choose some kids books to share, and this is one that was at the top of my list.

Grandma Tildy happily lives alone, but is a sucker for the pet salesman that comes along to her home. She purchases several animals who quickly become helpers and friends. But as the season is ending, the salesman is desperate to be rid of his final creature...and elephant. In fact, even though he doesn't make the sale, he abandons the elephant outside of Grandma Tildy's home. She eventually has pity on him as he cries outside in the snow, but she quickly realizes that the elephant has become a liability, as their food source quickly dwindles. It has a heartwarming ending and some of my favorite illustrations. I definitely recommend it.

I saw this the other day and I remembered that I used to read this all the time when I was small. I couldn't remember much about it from when I was little, besides the pictures of the elephant. I have some vague notions that it used to make me sad and then super happy at the end. Which is kind of how it made me feel reading it now.
