This was a good, rather quick read for a classic. Overall, I enjoyed it.

I had put off reading this book for many years due to a friend's comments that it was "boring". While I certainly do not agree with that sentiment, upon reading I did have to laugh overall at Flaubert's epic disgust for women which is portrayed in this novel - similar to Maugham's in Of Human Bondage. Emma Bovary is one of the most dislikable heroins (poor Charles!) I have come across in my reading history, but I still found this book to be thoroughly enjoyable.

A poor man's Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary has all of the "woe is me" without any of the genuine poetry and love. You're left feeling she is a foolish child who is pulling off her own Don Quixote by thinking that you can have the things you read in books just by believing hard enough.
To her credit, the French countryside towns do sound dreadfully boring and she really did have too much time on her hands. Working class family with a nanny and a housekeeper and a cook and a stay at home wife? Staying at home doing what, exactly?
All three stars are for the quality of the writing.

The drama is SPICY HOT. Ugh, the LONGING-the DESPAIR! Be warned, the "banalities and emptiness of pastoral life" is PREVALENT. Most of the story felt like a 2.5 but what's good is goood. 3!
