Perhaps it’s the translation causing a disconnect—or this is just gonna be pretty cheesy. I love Emily Woo Zeller’s narration, but I just keep getting pulled out of the story cuz of the unexpected cheese factor.

A delightful mystery, with the locked room dilemma resolved at the end of the book but many loose threads left dangling for the sequel. If only books 3-4 had been translated! I greatly enjoyed the characters and personalities here, but the writing struggled at times with clumsy or over-wrought wording- especially in the beginning- which is always a difficulty with translations. In my opinion, the plot was worth it!

The story takes place in ancient Chinese history and includes some historical fiction elements. I love that the main character is female and that there are a number of different female characters with three-dimensional personalities. However, there are a lot of names involved, so I needed to take notes to make sure I was remembering who everyone ones.
