A must have for anyone who loves learning random tidbits about their favorite characters. The paintings Cassandra Jean did are worth the price alone just to see them in print but learning even the most obscure things about almost every single character that has appeared and will appear in The Shadowhunter Chronicles makes this book an out-of-the-park home run.

With gorgeous illustrations and humour, An Illustrated History of Notable Shadowhunters and Denizens of Downworld by Cassandra Clare and Cassandra Jean (illustrator) is a special anthology filled with illustrations of characters in the Shadowhunter Chronicles, accompanied by a short paragraph about them.

Summary: This is a special anthology that includes illustrated portraits of every character in the Shadowhunter Chronicles and some information about each of them.

Tropes/Genres:
• urban fantasy
• paranormal (faeries, werewolves, etc.)
• illustrations
• companion book
• young adult

Review: I would like to start off by saying that the illustrations of the characters are GORGEOUS. The short paragraphs that provide readers with information related to each character are also witty and fun to read. It's nice to learn more about characters we either love or hate.

This book is divided into five sections: The Infernal Devices, The Last Hours, The Mortal Instruments, Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy and The Dark Artifices. The longest section is The Mortal Instruments, unsurprisingly, while the shortest is Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy – in fact, it only has three characters.

My favourite section is The Mortal Instruments. I also realised in the middle that the characters were listed in alphabetical order (according to their first names). Not only were the illustrations stunning and the descriptions interesting but the order of the different parts of the anthology was well done.

Anyway, this is my favourite line from the book:

"Will is famous among Shadowhunters for his heroism and his crippling fear of ducks."

If you know, you know :)

All in all, this is a nice book for those who absolutely love the Shadowhunter Chronicles and want a little bit of bonus content from the author regarding this series. The illustrations are beautiful, and the short descriptions of each character are witty and interesting.
