My only other Dicken's experience was Tale of Two Cities, which I hated. Great Expectations is written by an entirely different author. The prose has much more subtle (and not subtle!) humor, the characters are more likeable and memorable. Overall, although it is still a book that you need to be very awake to read (and it still will take quite some time to read), I highly recommend. It makes me interested to tackle the very long Bleak House.

Better than expected but a bit heavy on coincidence and two-dimensional characters for me. Pip's a bit of a knob too, isn't he?

I read this at the end of my freshman year of high school, and did not particularly enjoy it. That being said, I'm sure I would enjoy it more as an adult.

Some books suck you in and you don’t ever want to leave. Some books are a slog. For me, Great Expectations was the latter. I felt every single page. It was work to get through. Reading this book was not an enjoyable experience. It's not that I hated the book, it's that I just didn't care.
