This book is a beautiful celebration of one of the best genres out there.  Through poetry, onomatopoeia, blues rhythms, and gorgeous illustrations, Myers and Myers create an intelligent, fun, and riveting book filled with history and music.  Each poem focuses on something different--a jazz musician, an instrument, a subgenre, and more.

This is great for the child who loves music, who loves poetry, and great for the parent wanting to add more diversity to their shelves.

A Coretta Scott King honor book for illustration, Jazz is a picture book about the history of jazz music and the African American music experience. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the text features colorful lyrical poems.

I enjoyed most of the poems. Manyt of them felt jazzy. I really appreciated the glossary and timeline at the end. The backmatter was way more informative than I had expected.

I listened to the audiobook version (I read in some reviews that the paper version has some beautiful illustrations, but my library only had the audiobook available). It’s a great fun way to introduce jazz to older kids, you can even have dance party. It’s not an exhaustive introduction, by any means - there is some information in the beginning and at the end. Everything else, it’s just a potpourri of jazz music. It’s a really fun production, not really a book :)

Jazz music and it's musicians are celebrated and explored using poetry and music. I listened to this on audio book and the accompanying music fit together perfectly with the poetry. If you close your eyes you can almost imagine that you're sitting at Birdland enjoying a set and a cocktail.

Short but enjoyable.

I think this is a pretty advanced read for a picture book probably suitable for upper elementary or even some middle school kids. The poetry tells stories of jazz but it's fairly complicated stuff for little kids. Great artwork.

This picture book is comprised of 15 poems by Walter Dean Myers around the subject of jazz music. They capture the mood, rhythm and feel of jazz. There is an appendix at the back that includes music/jazz terms and one that includes a jazz timeline. Myers' son Christopher did the illustrations for this book which are beautiful.

It is no secret that I am a Walter Dean Myers fan. When I met him a few years ago I literally almost passed out. He is a gentle giant. This book is full of wonderful information in poetic form that any Language Arts or Music teacher can appreciate. The beautiful art work that Christopher Myers (Walter's son) has created adds to the authenticity of this amazing book. There is a wonderful glossary of terms as well as a timeline in the back for you to use as resources as well. Jazz is just one type of music and through this book you are able to learn about and celebrate the different styles of Jazz though Meyers' poetry and his sons art!
