i bought this book on sale for less than $2.99
i thought it would give some insight on the parallels between the iraq war & palestine under occupation, that didn't happen which is fine i guess. i could've done without the racism, sexism, homophobia & ableism it really didn't add anything to the story so there was no point in adding it at all. i found the dad character insufferable for 90% of this novel.
Graphic: War, Islamophobia, Homophobia, Gun violence, Colonisation, and Racism
Moderate: Sexism, Homophobia, War, Gun violence, Misogyny, Antisemitism, Ableism, and Racism
Minor: Excrement, Animal cruelty, Child abuse, Animal death, and Pregnancy
angebrown's review against another edition
I was invested in the family's story & interested in the political history when they were living in France and Lybia. When they moved to Syria, the vocabulary used and Riad's father's actions became too offensive/upsetting to ignore. I lost interest because of this.
Moderate: Ableism, Homophobia, Animal cruelty, Antisemitism, Misogyny, Violence, Pregnancy, and Murder
