Ridiculously powerful.
A story that takes a lot of seemingly disparate characters and topics-- parent-teen relationships; aloneness; white supremacy; potatoes; cancer; a flea circus...
In the hands of most authors, these various elements wouldn't work so well.
In the hands of A.S. King, the whole is so much greater than the sum of its parts.
If you enjoy the surrealism and heartbreak and hope of her other novels, you'll absolutely love this one.

Reread yesterday and today in honor of the Printz Award acceptance speech and the paperback edition coming out and in light of the conversations about racism that are taking place more passionately and loudly and sustainedly than they have in recent history, and it's even better the second time around.

Hard to follow at first, but once I figured out how all the characters were connected, I really liked it!

Not a fan. I didn't particularly are for the writing style or characters. It's a shame...I feel that King had important things to say about greed, mental illness, racism, abuse, etc. but I couldn't appreciate it since I was so wrapped up in just trying to figure out what was going on. All I could focus on was how weird it was.

Holy moly. I'm so glad I picked this one up. It was just the right amount of weird storytelling with a touch of fantastical-ness. I thought the way in which King sets the story for our characters was innovative and intriguing. The build-up to the movement of convergence was effortless, and I adored the subject matter discussed (I probably would've taken more of it if we're being honest). The characters are broken, weird, and messy--aren't we all? I would highly recommend to all.
