My son enjoys reading these Big Nate books with me at bedtime. This book involves the PS 38 gang taking on their rivals at Jefferson Middle School. My son enjoyed the scene where Nate was at a school dance in only his underpants... because what kind of hilarious antics can happen if you’re at school and your clothes get stolen while you’re in the locker room?!? My son has obviously not had one of those “I’m at school in only my underwear”. nightmares yet.

Overall it was a quick, fun read with a message at the end, but there are multiple flaws.
Nate can stop thinking he's the hero all the time. Why do the boys get so nervous and surprised about girls joining the Doodlers? They're in sixth grade. It's heteronormativity. Peirce is a good cartoonist, but his characters are either stereotypical or egotistic boys who don't know when to stop and step back (ex. Nate). Or both.
AND, why did the Add-on game drawing include a sombrero, and then (of course) another kid adds a handlebar mustache?! Stereotypical. Maybe think about that before including that in your books? Maybe Peirce didn't know any better. But now his readers will have this stereotype in their heads too- I was probably influenced by that when I first read this book years ago. Think about it first. It's actually not funny if it fits stereotypes and/or generalizations about a group of people.

These books are hilarious! Lincoln Pierce is just as funny as Jeff Kinney, and his drawings are way better. I absolutely love Nate's crazed facial expressions!

Jealousy and competition is always better in a group. The teamwork off of it is amazing. This is probably the best Big Nate novel- because this time, it's not just Nate who wants to kick butt, but it's the whole of P.S. 38 meeting their ultimate rival. Even worse so when P.S. 38's roof leaks and they're forced to move to Jefferson. Nate's comics gets even better with a collaboration (I absolutely ADORE Dee Dee, okay?) and the story of Achilles is made even better with pure cartooning genius and spite in the snow.
So yeah, this is probably my favourite Big Nate novel. By far.
