A worthy classic is an understatement. I personally loved this book and the contents. I find that it could be a great read for almost anyone, young and old. Whether you love animal fables, classics, or just a good compelling story, this book is a must.
Graphic: Animal cruelty, Blood, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Animal death, Death, Gore, Miscarriage, Violence, War
Minor: Confinement
This was a book I somehow missed reading when I was a kid! There are some books that are better read at a certain time in your life, but this is a beloved classic that has stood the test of time for a reason. Despite the violence and gore at the dramatic moments, it’s darling, and I got pretty wrapped up in the world of rabbits. It's a cozy book that lets me experience the smells and beauty and perils of nature without leaving my couch. Spoilers: after tricks and troubles and head-butting with other warrens and creatures, the rabbits live happily ever after on the hill, eating grasses in the balmy sunlight and avoiding elil.
I think it was a really sweet story about family and building trust amongst friends. The one thing I would change, and the only reason it's not a 5, is because there were far too few women characters.

A grand adventure story made unique by its portrayal through the eyes of rabbits.
The depth of thought that went into the rabbit culture was impressive, especially in the exploration of their virtues through folklore.
Despite the setting being low-stakes and geographically small by human standards, I was immediately caught up in the expansiveness and danger of the English countryside as experienced by rabbits. Richard Adams also embraces striking themes of leadership, self-sacrifice, and fighting for future generations, undoubtedly inspired by his time spent in the army.
My only criticism is that it took about 250 pages for me to get fully invested in the story and characters. I might be more prejudiced towards wild rabbits than the average British reader due to their destructive impact on the Australian environment. All in all, a really good book.
