I enjoyed this book, which is really just a collection of observations and memories of a young boy in Egypt in the 1950s. There is no plot to speak of, and events the boy observes are often confusing. Your experience as a reader gains you no more understanding than the boy himself has-meaning we don't know why he and his father are living the life they are or why his mother is not there. If you like reading about descriptions of a place and relationships perceived from a child's eye-level, the writing is simple and beautiful and paints an intriguing picture.
