Still working my way through the Wayward Children series. Overall, I really liked this one, where Regan stumbles upon a world full of hoof people. Regan grew up with her horse family and there were interesting discussions about what it mean to be human and civilized. I also really enjoyed the world building. I enjoy short stories that are insular stories well told.

Thinking back on it, I'm not really sure what happened in the sense that the plot felt anticlimactic. I remember reading the Wayward Children book about the goblin market and I saw a comment saying that they wished that McGuire would have described the really epic moments that she mentions offhandedly. I feel similarly with this book, that everything was building up to Regan saving the world and she does but it is by rejecting becoming a tyrant. I do not feel like this book had the same epic build up and resolution that the first book of the series had. Maybe that is not supposed to be the point of this book but I finished the book liking it, but feeling slightly underwhelmed.

This was still great, but the writing felt a taddd shallow compared to others in the series. I guess I just like the dark wicked worlds best.
