Rathr than just a collection of stories, this is a look at the formative years of Captain America and th important issues that went into forming him as a character. From simply a reaction to the events leading up to the US's entry into World War Two to Stan Lee's re-adjustment of Cap as a symbol of freedom, it's really interesting to see how things changed. Of particular interest is the evolution of Jack Kirby's art style. In the earliest issues he's more traditionl style feels somewhat pedestrian, but when he developes the crazy, Baroque style that made him famous things really take on a life of their own.

A wonderful collection for those interested in the history of the character and comics as a medium. I'd recommend picking up the hardcover edition if you can as it is absolutley beautiful!
