Prachtig geschreven. Soms heel grappig, maar dan weer heel emotioneel. Het liet me alle gevoelens voelen. Zette me aan het denken, inspireerde me. Alles wat ik zo tof vind aan John Green komt hier in terug.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. The way it was so introspective about the little things in life made me appreciative of such small things in my own day to day life. It made me appreciate for the first time how infinitesimal we are on this planet, which is something that in the past, always frightened me to no end. I love John Green and all his works, but this one holds an extra special place in my heart.

There is also irony is Goodreads asking me to rate this book out of 5 stars, because now I feel a little like John Green did writing about other items in his life. It feels like a full circle moment. For that reason, I am giving John Green’s The Anthropocene Reviewed five stars.

Well written but the topics and Covid references weren’t for me right now.

This was my second crack at an audiobook, and it was an absolutely delightful experience from beginning to end. This is partially, to be sure, due to it being developed initially as a podcast.

But it also is a testament to the strength of these bite-sized pieces. The way John Greene weaves stories of loss, of joy, of doubt, of existential bodily awareness for good and bad, into pieces ostensibly about everything from the Indianapolis 500 to the movie Harvey to Diet Dr. Pepper and much more is startling every time. It was a trick that never got old, because it never felt like a trick. This is how our brains work, drawing lines between seemingly disparate facts. And as an aside, I learned so many fun facts that I have since forgotten to make space for new ones!

I want to specifically shout out a few of the chapters:

“Googling Strangers” becomes a heart-wrenching study on grief, the impact it has on those expected to carry it, and how having certainty isn’t always the balm it’s made out to be.

“Auld Lang Syne” is a touching portrait of a song we’ve all heard, and I personally love, while also weaving in the life and later death of his close friend and author Amy Krouse Rosenthal. “We live in hope--that life will get better, and more importantly that it will go on, that love will survive even though we will not.”

“Jerzy Dudek’s Performance on May 25, 2005” tied together that is the silliness and seriousness of sports fandom with a baffling triumph in a tight bow.

All told, it’s hard to encapsulate why I loved this so much in so many words. Instead, I’ll turn to the system that, as Green pointed out in the introduction, only grew to prominence with computers despite its seeming ubiquity now:

I give The Anthropocene Reviewed 5 stars.
