The book follows a Jewish girl and her family in the Netherlands as the country is occupied by Germany. They lose more and more rights, but refuse to let go of their optimism.
The book shows how the family tries to remain brave in a situation that seems both mundane and hopeless at the same time - naive in their optimism - while a mounting dread follows the reader. "It will be over soon" and "That would never happen here" get said several times. You know what's going to happen, but that does not take away from the book. The book could have benefited from a more detailed story, but otherwise it's great.
