My new favorite by Silvia. I can't say enough about how amazing this book is. A richly painted world, a love that pulls at your heart, and a heroine you can really see yourself in.

I was immediately drawn to the art deco and Mayan inspired cover so this book was on my tbr list since it came out. Finally I got the chance to read it. The whole "don't judge a book by its cover thing" didn't ring true in this case. "Gods of Jade and Shadow" is just as beguiling, interesting, and easy to fall in love with.

This book read a lot like a YA novel to me. While the storyline could be interesting, everything felt very surface level.

reads a little young for an adult fantasy but it was so charming and wonderful otherwise. flowery language that would fit right into the lyrics of a Spanish love song. an excellent dip into Mayan mythos without digging so deep as to confuse.

MY TAKE ON THE SYNOPSIS:
Gods of Jade & Shadow tells the story of Casiopia, a girl who’s mothers family was rich but her fathers was poor. Because of this after her father passes away and her mother has no choice but to move back in with her family, Casiopia is seen as less family and more hired help. One day the rebellious Casiopia opens a forbidden chest & unleashes the Mayan God of Death, Hun Kame who places one of his bones in her. Because of this, the two are now connected so she has no choice but to travel all over Mexico with him so that he can retrieve his throne back from his treacherous brother.

REVIEW:
This story was jam packed with everything a female reader can hope for: a strong female lead, a great adventure, fantasy, and of course, forbidden love that shouldn’t occur but happens anyway. The tale is beautiful and Moreno does such an amazing and imaginative mind that the world she paints out for us, along with the Gods and monsters, are absolutely beautiful.
The story even stuck to its era. The characters, including Casiopia, thought and talked true to her time period & her home, a place where Strict Catholic rules were once put in place. I also loved how you could visibly see the change Hun-Kame, the God of Death, begins to make as he starts off as a mighty God but becomes a bit more human everyday.
The only reason why I didn’t rate this book 5 stars is because it took me a while to read and while it was beautiful, it wasn’t exactly the page turner I had been hoping for.

FINAL RATING:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/out of 5 stars!

i aspire to write like Silvia. like girl gimme your prose and vocab. a literal masterclass in writing, period.

what a refreshing lore with mayan mythology, gods, and the underworld, all underlined with themes of forgiveness and bravery. i loved reading about casiopea and hun-kamé’s journey, but i feel like there were a couple of logistical gaps. like how did they get that money for transportation and accommodations ? like what is the magic system ? i wished that things were explained a bit more, but also at the same time, i think the boom was the perfect length.
had read a comment by another reader who said they felt like it was repetitive and i think by my reading that before i started reading really affected my experience. so note to self, don’t read too many reviews AHA
i feel like the romance part of this wasn’t really fleshed out too well, like i wasn’t too too attached to casiopea and hun-kamé because of the way the story jumps around different timelines and perspectives. but i gotta say, this is the first book that i’ve been satisfied with an ending where the two mcs don’t end up together so yay
