Much better than Clariel. I always loved Lirael and found her the most interesting of all the potential Abhorsens. However, the incessant referencing to her sadness about the Disreputable Dog being gone was so irritating. I don't know why Nix brought it up in every bloody paragraph. Apart from that, it was a good story which I happily trundled through.

I love this world. Sabriel is one of the first fantasy books that I very distinctly remember reading - I remember I couldn't put it down (and I also remember I wrote a book report on it for English class in 5th grade). The chance to re-visit this world is one that can't be passed on. However, I really love Sabriel and Touchstone and have always wished to hear just a little bit more about them (not so much them as old boring adults or the lives of their children). This book leaves me so hungry for more.
I like the characters in this book well enough (and Nix is great at coming up with new characters that are distinct and interesting and bring so much depth to his world). Parts towards the end felt a little mechanical or rushed - I felt like it actually could have been a bit more content.
In any case, it was a very enjoyable read and reading this series feels like shouldering your favourite and most comfortable backpack as you set off for a fun and challenging hike.

I enjoyed this book immensely. While it wasn't as gripping as the original trilogy, it was a joy to read about the further adventures of some of my all time favorite characters.

While I did feel like this one had some more of the feeling of the earlier books it still did not hold a torch to Sabriel. Also so weird that Sabriel was only in the last like 40 pages. Ferin is a fun addition but her relationship with Sam did not make a huge amount of sence to me. All in all another fun read!

Meh.
"Okay, now the plot's going to start... hm, no. Okay, maybe now... no." -- me, for the first 80% of the book before realising that no, this *was* the closest thing to a plot we're going to get.
At first I thought the lazy, clumsy, repetitive callbacks to previous books throughout were just a heavy-handed way of making sure you remembered what happened, but eventually I realised they're there to trigger enough nostalgia that fans don't notice this is the book equivalent of empty calories.
Read it for completeness if you're a big fan of the series, but don't expect much.
