Another potboiler from JB that dishes up exactly what it promises - fun, adventure, a little off-kilter and off-colour, a couple of good protagonists, and a twist at the end that I didn't spot (but should have).

If you're a fan of JB's recent work, you know what you're in for. Can't wait for the next one!

If you like time-travel adventures with a dash of humour, and can tolerate danger and intermittent violence, this may be your sort of book.

Like [b:A Girl in Time|33305492|A Girl in Time (A Girl in Time #1)|John Birmingham|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1481399092l/33305492._SY75_.jpg|54040490], it's a roller-coaster ride of disasters and recoveries, unexpected twists and turns, which had me genuinely wondering at times how Smith and (especially) McCall could survive. If you're of a nervous disposition, take a sedative before proceeding.

For reasons of plot, we don't get as much this time of the enjoyable interplay between the contrasting characters of Smith and McCall; but the plot seems more coherent and really seems to be going somewhere in this story. The two of them are gradually gaining more understanding of their time-travel device, so there's less of the random walk that we experienced in the first book, although we still take in a variety of times and places.

At least one more book is promised in the series, and I'll be interested to see where this journey is going.

The story of Cady McCall and John Titanic Smith continues as they try to travel through time back to where it all began. But it doesn't go as planned and they become separated and go in different times and directions. Something that could be a great action adventure, but it wasn't.

I suppose I was expecting more from this and was thus disappointed. I felt it got bogged down in introspective reflection about the woes of life because it had all gone wrong. Harping on about it doesn't make for a good read. It didn't have the action adventure thriller feel I was hoping for.

Two of the strangest pair of adventurers Cady McCall, a foul-mouthed geek grrl of the twenty-first century and Deputy US Marshal John Titanic Smith from the nineteenth are lost in the swirling maze of past and future ages, when they begin to travel using a powerful time piece collected by Smith in the previous book 'A girl in Time'. Now Cady and Smith tumble helplessly toward a new fantastic adventure, somewhere along the infinite corridors of time.

Even more action, which drops our readers into the middle of the action from the first paragraph. It's not only a wild ride but educational, you'll discover that during the Salem witch hunts folk were crushed and hanged, not burned. With a visit to Nazi Germany where the intrepid Smith avoids the greatest temptation a time travel can suffer and completely fails to try and kill Hitler, though he does collect a mysterious professor then our duo struggle with pirates and ner do wells in a pre-revolutionary Boston.

Can they avoid the diabolical threat posed by the mysterious time agents, will Cady ever get the smell of maggoty meat out of her hair, how long will we have to wait for the third book in the series.
