I wouldn't have thought you could get a great kid's book from such a well known song. But the art is simply brilliant. Serious and funny. Detailed and yet not fussy. With such great facial expressions. With an obvious but great ending.

My kids and I both love this book, and my almost-five-year-old still asks me for the song at night. This version of the song has really nice, amusing illustrations that are sort of Appalachian-inspired.

The illustrations really steal the show here, too bad the song goes too fast to really enjoy them as a read aloud. This one would make a nice one-on-one read but make sure you take time to enjoy the pictures!
