I had no idea that book is actually part of the larger series. For years I honestly thought it was a stand alone within the same universe, years apart from The Three Musketeers, that's what I get for not reading the book blurb 🤣

After realizing that, the struggle was keeping not just the cast in mind and who's who, but I struggled with the writing as I usually tend to do with older books so it pains me to admit how long it took me to read this but I'm glad that I did.

The actuality of the Man in the Iron Mask is such a trivial moment in the book that I can only guess that Dumas meant for it to be a metaphor for the characters and how they all hide under masks, with the Musketeers under "iron" ones in part of their sworn oaths to king country as well as themselves whom they have served for years.

Here are older heroes, showcased in their ages with wisdom, loyalty, and friendship, grounded in that very realism as I heard their weariness as well as their bodies failing them here and there throughout some fight scenes.

Porthos has been my favorite for years and this book just expanded my love for him right till the very end. His comedic timing at the beginning offset his strength beautifully and played well into his vanity — like how many suits did he have? That not only did he wear them and well, they were gifted to his most beloved of servants who I'm saddened to say didn't get a chance to rock them.
