A grim and gritty portrayal of slum life at the end of the 19thC. If you imagine a trajectory from Dickens to Orwell (both chronologically and stylistically) this is pretty much the half-way point. It retains some of the 'gaslight' melodrama of the earlier Victorians, but the writing is more naturalistic and, well, 'real'.
