This book, published by Harvard University Press and with an introduction by Annette Gordon-Reed, is still free for Kindle, and you should pick it up. Because the essays in this eBook are actually from longer works (basically chapters), besides being a good read about racism is also a way to preview the longer works and determine if you want to read them.

After Reed’s excellent introduction, the book opens with “Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination” by Toni Morrison, which honesty should be the only reason you need to pick the book. Morrison’s essay is about race and literature as well as literary criticism.

The next essays look at not only the slave markets but also lynching, and especially important considering this past year, racism in the medical profession.

The book does not just concern racism and Black citizens but also Native American, Mexican American, Bengali and Chinses. It is these essays that are also interesting and illustrate less known aspects of the history of racism in the US. “The Injustice Never Leaves You: Anti-Mexican Violence in Texas” to be particularly important as well considering the whole Trump’s wall.

There are also essays about economy and money as well as historical perspective.
