learned so much about chinese immigration to the US + how people got here + the histories behind chinatowns around the world. Found myself laughing out loud at multiple points throughout the book simply at the AUDACITY that these people displayed.

A really impressive piece of researched narrative nonfiction, but without the propulsion and focus of his later books. If you’re into US immigration policy, you’re in for a treat. If not, maybe not so much of a treat.

I’m actually sad how at little I enjoyed this. Arguably I only picked it up because it was a PRK book and as everyone and their dog knows I adore his writing, but this was a SLOG and I only finished it because I wanted to give it every possible chance to impress me, alas it did not. The story was okay, but not the most interesting thing, and it just went on wayyyy too long. Sad times :(
