A quick, photo-filled intro to the first film; although it succeeds as a lush visual companion, it lacks structure and ends as suddenly as it begins.

Well this was a ride.
I read this book a few years ago but understood very little and rereading was a lot of fun.
While the plot took a while to start it was very interesting when it did. I also enjoyed to learn more about the world, but the things I loved about this book were the friendships that were built.

This is, in short, a book I should have read a very long time ago.

I was dragged to see all the films at the cinema as they came out and all I can really remember is hiding from scary things and falling asleep in the cinema, more than a little disgruntled that I had been kept from playing with my new set of Hamma beads because of something I didn't really see the point in. After the final one came out, my brother bought a paperback edition, a hulking tome, of all three books together. He wasn't much of a reader but it captivated him enough and he finished the entire thing. That alone should have alerted me to the fact that it was a winner but I was stubborn.

Growing up, I was told constantly I wouldn't like fantasy and I suppose that sort of ingrained itself into the fibre of my being and this stayed with me until (finally) I read A Game of Thrones a couple of years ago and then I learned that epic fantasy most certainly was for me.

And so, I've known for a while I should read this. Hell, it's been sitting on my shelf for a very, very long time now in all its hardback illustrated glory but I was intimidated. Then I watched the second Hobbit movie twice in one day, realised I was being an idiot and began.

So much of this novel is repeated and quoted in other works, everyone knows it to some extent, but I found that was part of its beauty. Tolkein created a world so vivid, so perfectly imaginable, that even authors who construct their own cannot help but pay homage to it. It's interesting, challenging and diverse and though the story is something that you may have heard before, the execution almost certainly is not.

I have to say, I am one for minute descriptions of everything, I love that absolute attention to detail that frustrates some so I can understand that parts of this may seem tedious. However, the prose is so rich I would challenge you not to at the very least appreciate it for its technical mastery of the language.

I can certainly understand that it's not for everyone, but it most certainly is for me.

When i picked this up i was very scared that i wasn’t going to like this so beloved book, and during the first 100 pages that fear seemed to be a amplified. But as the book proceeded i found myself very enchanted with the world and it’s characters. I’m very excited to keep reading this series.

Also Sam and Frodo are gay for each other, you can’t change my mind.
