Hard to know where to place this remarkably honest, if seemingly swiftly composed, memoir. Irwin has written some great books on medieval Arabic literature, but this is quite different.

Parts will only interest those who were of his generation. Other parts will confound and frustrate.

So, a mixed bag but an interesting account of Sufi discipleship in Algeria nonetheless.
