My first ever DNF (Put down at 53%). This was awful. I expect that something was lost in translation, because this was decidedly dull and disjointed, so much was lost to the awful writing style. The political plot obviously epic in reality was a disconnected and uninteresting read. The love storyline was even worse. I didn’t buy it, there was no emotional pull. It felt like we were being told, rather than shown (that first person disconnect dominated). I also really didn’t like the switch in narrative, from first person to third and back again. I kept putting it down and really struggled to pick it up again. Would not recommend.

Interesting first person perspective of the Cuban Revolution that motivated me to do some follow up research to learn more. I enjoyed it from an educational perspective, but had a hard time connecting with the characters or narrative - perhaps due to it being a translated book? Lacked a bit of the warmth and intimacy I usually find in historical fiction.

I probably would've preferred a nonfiction piece about this time period...didn't enjoy the love story much either.
