I really enjoyed this book. I liked the history of the author's family intertwined with the political history of Iran (by no means comprehensive). I did think it meandered a bit, focusing too much on the author's mother's "quirks." But it was a good read.

Very good book. I like the way the book weaved the relationship between a mother and her daughter and the history of Iran and the Iranian Revolution. Also, there were a lot of pictures in the book.

this book was okay, but just okay, and i expected more. the time line was confusing, and at times seemed contradictory. the author was a bit, um, shallow. though she did mention the tragedy of the iran/iraq war, it felt like she was looking at it through a window rather than living it. i read it on the heels of a similar book written by an afghan woman during the russion occupation, so i couldn't help comparing the two. this one was sorely lacking. i haven't read reading lolita in tehran, but i hope for more meat.

Nafisi used this book to talk about her complicated relationship with her parents, and although she came off as honest in her portrayal of them, there is very little self reflection in here. She also seems reluctant to talk about those family members like her brother who are still alive, which is understandable but leaves the reader feeling like they arent getting the whole story. Over all it was a good read with an look into family life in Iran but know going in this is mainly about Nafisi and her mother with only sporadic moments from the revolution.
