Dvě místa na slunci by Becky Chambers

What a beautiful and contemplative story. I absolutely love Becky Chambers’ writing. Her ability to write funny, empathetic, realistic characters that you want to root for is so profound. I loved watching both Pepper and Sidra grow as people and as friends, navigating new places and unfamiliar people and learning from them. Like with most of Chambers’ works, I wept and finished the story feeling like I received the book equivalent of a warm hug.

Read if you like character-focused, heartwarming stories about finding your way in the world.

I absolutely loved this book, probably more than A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, which is saying something because I love found families in space. Chambers does an amazing job of exploring coming-of-age by juxtaposing two characters that are both realizing who they are, but in vastly different life stages. Lovey and Pepper both try to figure out how to become themselves, who they even are, and how to make meaningful relationships. The stories are so poignant and brought me to tears seeing these characters develop, make mistakes, and grow in their journeys. Like the previous book, the plot is mostly character driven which may not appeal to everyone, but I prefer character driven plots so this was right up my alley.

This book simultaneously shows how alien other intelligent species, particularly AI, can be, and also manages to make them deeply relatable. That's not all it does, but that's what it does the most thoroughly and magnificently and beautifully, yet without pretension. Pepper's and Sidra's stories weave together and mirror each other in unexpected ways as we explore the notions of self and body, of family, of freedom and choice. I absolutely devoured it, but it's not light, and it left me with a lot of things to think about. And also left me deeply happy, which is still something I don't get often enough in SF.
