I didn’t like this book as much as the first one, so I probably won’t pick up the third for a while. But I did still enjoy it. I liked how it flipped between Peppers present, with Sidra, and her past as a Girl enslaved and then marooned in a junkyard. It was an interesting, and very believable, take on how humans would act if we got access to lots of technology. It serves as a commentary on a society that consumes more than it can sustain and doesn’t care much for the ethics of how it is done. Remind you of anything? Like perhaps modern child labour in mines? Like pushing our planet into crisis but not caring who gets affected as long as the rich can continue comfortable (and lavish) lifestyles? No? Okay, well I don’t think we should have access to space in much capacity until we can ensure justice and equity for people on Earth (aka someone should take Bezoz's fortune away from him) ✨✨
2022 re-read update: I liked this book a lot more the second time I read it. Honestly, I think the first time I was still a little upset that it wasn't following the same characters as The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet (since I am a sucker for characters over complex plots, if I don't like reading the characters then the book will be a lot less enjoyable). But now, after becoming more familiar with both the stories and characters and knowing about the different characters it was just a joy to read. I love that I don't have to connect anything that is happening to the real world and that I can escape, but that it also gives me so many chances to delve into the underlying issues obviously stemming from the capitalism and extractivism so prevalent in our society today, especially Pepper's past. This is deffo the direction we are heading if we were to head into space now during our current system and approach.
