My brother Mark and his wife Cecilia got me this book (personally autographed by the author) a while back. I’ve read it through once before but never logged it. Sadly the actual manufacture of the book was poor and the cover has come off. I’ve tried to glue it back on. Right now it’s got glue and three big rubber bands holding it together. Very enjoyable and relatable. Motivating. I’ve got to get back running.

Received this book from Netgalley/Publisher in exchange for an honest review!

The Oatmeal. <3

I already love the Oatmeal and the comics there, and I was totally happy when I saw this one on Netgalley.

Quite a few of the comics are ones you already can read/find on the site for the Oatmeal, but there are also various new ones. I really enjoyed seeing old and new combined.

And yeah, thanks Matthew Inman for those horrific drawings of bees and hornets. *shivers* I do hope I will never meet those critters, I am not sure what I would do, stand still and hope for the best or run away as fast as I can.

The book is all about his running, what he thinks of it. What he thinks of diets. But also has tips and hints about running. And while I am not one to start running, I did enjoy those tips and if one day I decide to run I know I will at least have had some advice. :)

It was a really fun book and I was laughing out loud quite a few times, it was just that hilarious.

And while I don't run, I do other things and I know all about the Blerch and how annoying he is.

All in all, I would really recommend this book to everyone, even if you don't want to run, I would say read this, you won't be disappointed.

This is my kind of running! All Blerch-al-ed up. Gonna go to a Blerch Run (The Oatmeal holds Blerch runs!) for sure after this.

'The Terrible and Wonderful Reasons Why I Run Long Distances' by Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal is a funny and heartfelt collection of humor about why he runs long distance.

He began running for a number of reasons and receives a series of benefits from it. He talks about the challenges of eating the wrong things, and why running outside is better than other exercise. He tells why he doesn't run at 5 AM. Stomach crunches, treadmills and tanning beds are out, while running up mountains being chased by killer bees is in. Included with the physical book are some Blerch stickers. The Blerch is what tells runners to slow down or quit.

All in all, it's a good argument and encouragement for those who are thinking about running. It doesn't make light of the pain and side effects of long distance running, but argues for why they are beneficial. It's filled with The Oatmeal's trademark humor, and I found myself laughing and reading it aloud.

I received a review copy of this ebook by Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this hilarious and heartwarming ebook.

I adore The Oatmeal. His drawing style, his presentation, his sense of humor, and how he openly shares his opinions in this graphical way, I love it all.

This book, however, did not make me laugh out loud like so many of his comics do, as well as some of his other books. That's okay. I gained insight into something personal by an artist and writer that I admire, and it was done in that Oatmeal style that I love.

Understand that this book is pretty much only about running, and things regarding running. I'm a runner, but I'm the kind of runner that Inman might find disdainful. I use a treadmill, mostly so that I can watch television while I run. While I did train (and mightily so!) for a half marathon a couple of years ago, after those 13.1 miles I scaled way back. Because I don't like running, and Inman must love it. I did relate to plenty of what he wrote, and I respect his opinion on the rest. While I dislike the sport, I do love how it makes me feel, and also, I enjoy eating and drinking more as a result.

Recommended for fans of The Oatmeal, for former fat kids, for runners, and general humans.
