City of Ashes certainly provided action but for me lacked connection. What do I mean? I felt like the story was a bit all over the place, a bit fragmented. Yes, there was a plot - a beginning, middle and end - but the plot felt forced. The action was good but it almost seemed that things worked out a bit too well. My real beef is not with the action but with the characters. There did not seem like there was enough connection between them.

I did not care much for Simon, this time. Clary was annoying. I wanted her to stop all her shrieking. If she is a shadowhunter, get on with it. Learn. It does not seem like the others wanted to teach her much. I suppose my biggest problem with her is the way she is around Simon. I did not like her responses to him, her over the top worry and guilt. Nor did I like the feeling that she was settling for him. He is her security blanket that she does not want to give up.
Jace annoyed me a bit as well. His anger and thrill seeking nature got on my nerves. When I stopped and thought...geesh, he is 17...then his outbursts put things into better perspective. I was impressed with how he handles himself during times of battle of physical and mind along with how he was open about his feelings (at times).

I think fans of the series will love this scene from Jace's point of view, I thought it was just okay. I'm still disgusted by the whole stupid twist Clare put into the books.

After finally reading City of Bones, I was *thrilled* to start reading City of Ashes. Where CoB was made of awesomesauce, CoA was slightly disappointed because it just didn't have me hooked like the first book did.

Cassandra Clare has developed an exciting and thrilling world of Shadowhunters and demons. I really like how she put everything together! Somehow, I wasn't that thrilled about the sequel. It felt like an inbetween book and I generally don't like those kind of books. I felt the plot was okay, but it didn't feel like an awesome, thrilling and good plot like it did in the first book in the series.

Having said that, I really liked Simon. I think I am starting to like him better than I like Jace (and I LOVED him in the first book) and I liked that Simon had a slightly bigger role in this book. I've heard that he's going to have a prominent role in the third book as well, so that's something that I really will be looking forward to!

Of course, I will continue the series. I'm not as excited for City of Glass as I was for this book after reading the first book, but I will definitely be reading it in the summer.

My overall rating: 4/5

Because despite the less appealing plot, I loved the world Cassandra Clare created for Shadowhunters and demons!

The second book in the Mortal Instruments series is consistent to the first book; with the action, drama and humor.

It introduces many new characters out of which my favourites were Maryse and Robert Lightwood and the Queen of Seelies- the latter who kind of annoyed me. Another character that annoyed me was Inquisitor Herondale.

In terms of relationships, Jace and Clary are still trying to figure where they stand with eachother amidst the revelation in the latter part of the first book which was a total plot twist. Isabelle and Clary seem to have found a common ground with eachother. And Alec is still a bit skeptical of her.

The plot continues with Luke becoming a recurring character- to become the 'responsible adult'- and Simon going though an even crazier transformation.

More secrets with relation to Valentine and The Circle is put forward. Clary discovers a new ability- in a rather funny way making it more hilarious because it is centered around Alec- and the Seelie Queen hints at the fact that Clary and Jace may have been experimented on.

There are several ends that I feel like don't meet. New plot lines are drawn and what confused me the most was amidst the final battle Jace is privy to a secret told to him by- none other than- Inquisitor Herondale, who had a strong dislike towards him from the start.

All in all; the drama, the action, the well placed humor and slow burn romance lines (specially between my favourites #malec ) gives great support to #cassandraclare 's well crafted Shadow World.

Okay let’s just sum up all most the bad in brief points:

The plot - if that’s what this mess could be called - was bad, literally not a story, just a mess.

So many sentences made little to no sense, with bad grammar and scenes and conversations contradicted like the author had lost her flow or forgot who said what. There was also constant use of ‘the other girl’ and ‘the other boy’, just say the character’s name or he/she, kept thinking another person randomly joined the scenes.

All the boys are slim with long hair. While I would appreciate a change from many YA fantasies having many characters with unearthly fitness. This is ridiculous, their trained Shadowhunters and half demon creatures, they’re allowed to have muscle. It started to sound like Clare had a fetish for it.

I still don’t like Jace, he’s a mean character, yet I’m supposed to see him hiding his emotional damage with endearing arrogance? No he’s mean and only at the end of this book starting to seem like he’s changing. The Mortal Instruments was originally meant to be a trilogy, so that’s at least 2/3rds of the story line with a unlikable main character.

My pet hate in books/tv shows/films: emotions were only shown when the plot needed them. A character experienced emotional pain when something bad happened but seemingly felt nothing when the same thing happened but would later be revealed as being alright.

Lastly, oh the casually okayness with incest! At points Clary and Jace are okay with incest between them. Probably best suited to Game of Thrones and not books read by young teens. Just a thought.
