“If you only come face-to-face with your own mistakes once or twice in your life it’s bound to be extra painful. I face mine every day - that way they ain’t usually much worse than a dry shave”

I read this book because it is frequently cited as a most favourite book, and it is a Pulitzer winner. It took a long time to complete the 37-hour audio version, as it had to be returned to the library, and there was a waitlist before I could borrow it again. I am not really a fan of Westerns, and this epic novel, while beautifully written, didn’t convert me. The portrayal of indigenous peoples in this saga was jarring to read in 2024.  Women have 2 notes - whore or heroine. However, the characters and their relationships were well written, and there is much humour amidst the brutality.

Love (genuinely) that all of these characters are so uniquely awful and pathetic and that there’s  nothing to root for except for their downfalls. Read this whole thing hoping they’d all shoot one another and most of the time got my wish.
