Während die Kapitel aus Sicht der "Lebensform", die hier durch einen von Menschen geschaffenen Nanovirus in ihrer evolutionären Entwicklung unterstützt wird, fast immer interessant und vergleichsweise mit Empathie zu lesen sind, bleiben die Kapitel aus Sicht der Menschen eher flach. Das ist die größte Schwäche des Romans: Die menschlichen Protagonisten sind leider kaum mehr als Schablonen ihrer Rollen: Historiker (Classicist), Technikerin, Sicherheitsoffizier, Kommandant.

Dass Tchaikowsky es trotzdem schafft, dass ich hier 4 Sterne vergebe, deutet auf ein großes Potential hin. Wenn im Folgeband "Children of Ruins" mehr Empathie für die menschlichen Protagonisten abfällt, könnte er selbst bei mir einen Volltreffer landen.

I was riveted by the first half of the book, but I really felt myself slowing down in the second half. I'm not sure how I would have rather the book ended, but I definitely felt a little disappointed. It was still really interesting and made me think a lot about the concepts.
