Thank you to Pigeonhole and Stuart MacBride for the opportunity to read this.

At some point I lost track of Stuart MacBride’s original series of Logan Macrae books. I’d enjoyed the first few, but missed the next one when it was published and didn’t catch up.

This particular book is the third instalment in a separate series about ex-Detective Inspector Ash Henderson. But, despite not having read the previous two this absolutely worked as a standalone novel. The references to backstory were well-handled and only encouraged me to add the previous books to my TBR pile rather than being distracting.

The book is darkly funny. There are lots of very violent moments so it’s not for the faint of heart. But, despite some very questionable morals displayed by Ash Henderson (don’t ever hurt someone he cares about), the core humanity of the characters shines through and makes it a really engaging and enjoyable read.
