Collection of essays on travel in the English countryside by novelist Henry James, excerpted from his 1905 collection, English Hours, as part of Penguin's English Journeys series.

James, an admirer of both scenery and local culture, recounts a series of excursions out of London to visit historical homes and cathedrals. His descriptions get a bit wordy in some places, but do a nice job of evoking the mood of the scenery.

He is also amusing in his cynical take on the burgeoning tourism industry with its ticket-takers and souvenir-hawkers.

While the author did not dive deeply into the history surrounding the places he visited, there is enough detail given to provide some interesting background for anyone reading English historical literature.
